Is Organic Hair Colour Actually Effective?
Organic hair colour is a hot topic in the world of hairdressing right now. "Organic" and "green" have been buzzwords for years, but how effective is organic hair colour, really? Like many eco-friendly products, there's a common assumption that natural alternatives simply don't perform as well as their chemical-laden counterparts. So, is that actually true?
Nothing Is 100% Organic — But O&M Comes Close
When it comes to hair colour, no product can honestly claim to be 100% organic. That's because a small amount of synthetic chemistry is still needed to adjust your hair's pH so it can properly absorb colour. What you can do, however, is ask your stylist for a colour product that relies on natural extracts and leaves out the harsher, more toxic chemicals.

What Makes O&M Different?
O&M organic hair colour is formulated to replace many of the harsh chemicals typically found in hair colour with natural extracts and minerals instead. Native Australian ingredients like Lilly Pilly, Banksia Flower, Quandong, Tasmanian Sea Kelp, and Davidson Plum feature throughout the range, and as a bonus, they make the colour smell incredible.
As an organic-leaning product, O&M also removes many of the highly irritant chemicals known to trigger scalp or allergic reactions. Most generic hair colours rely on ammonia to help colour penetrate the hair. It's effective, but it's often the cause of red eyes, irritation, and a strong chemical smell. O&M instead uses MEA, an alkaline agent that does the same job without the irritation.
If you've ever suspected you're allergic to hair dye, the culprit may have been a chemical called paraphenylenediamine, or PPD. While it delivers reliable permanent colour, it can also cause redness, dermatitis, and even swelling of the face or scalp. O&M replaces PPD with a safer alternative, PTDS, which allows roughly half of clients with a PPD allergy to colour their hair again.
